Bridges

At Slipshoe Street Dental Practise we look to make sure our patients are full aware of the detail around Bridges. If you need more info please contact us.

Bridges overview

Bridges are a restorative treatment option to replace missing teeth. They are attached to both teeth either side of the gap or sometimes just one. This depends of the strength of the supporting teeth and the forces the bridge will experience. Bridges are used to replace a small number of teeth and are a permanent solution to missing teeth. The process is very similar to the making of a crown.

Conventional bridges

This involves preparing one or both of the teeth either side of a gap (abutment) for crowns which hold a tooth over the gap (pontic). Like crowns they can be made from metal, porcelain bonded to metal or high grade ceramics

Maryland bridges

These bridges are attached to teeth on one or either side of the gap (abutment). Sometimes minimal preparation of the teeth is necessary. There is usually a metal wing that fits behind the adjacent tooth holding the false tooth (pontic) in the gap. We use a resin bonding material to fit them, which creates a better and more secure fit. Longer term these are generally less secure than conventional bridges

Would implants be better?

Ask your dentist to see if a bridge is suitable to replace your missing teeth. Sometimes implants are a better solutions
